Al-Shabaab commander has been killed and several fighters were wounded in security operation in Middle Shabelle region, Somali military confirmed Monday.
Somali National Army (SNA) has recently intensified operations against al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections, slated for this year.
Mohamed Abdi Suubiye, better known Toosoow, a senior al-Shabaab ring leader was killed last Saturday after clashing with Somali forces in Darussalam village near Aadan Yabaal town.
Through the military owned radio, SNA said Toosoow was behind a series of attacks on civilians and security forces including military bases in south of the country.
On Sunday, the military also killed more than 15 al-Shabaab fighters in fierce fighting in central Somalia.
The SNA spokesman, Ali Hashi Abdi said that the army also injured several insurgents during the fighting near Dhusamareb town, the administrative capital of Galmudug state in Somalia.
Abdi said that the forces also recovered weapons after the militants ambushed the SNA soldiers in an area between Dhusamareb town and El-Dhere village in Galmudug state.
